Core Program in Spain

(Now open to academically invested students who are not part of UD's Core Program)

Spend the summer in Spain! Core in Spain will unite English, History, and Sociology. Most visitors spend a few days exploring Spain’s vibrant sunny beaches, delicious tapas, and festive Flamenco dance. Core in Spain will be an extended, month-long residency as faculty and students creatively explore Spain’s history and cultural norms through investigations of literature, religion and society. With Spain as both the classroom and the very subject of the program, Core in Spain and its three integrated courses, will embark abroad upon on an intensive and expansive learning adventure in the best interdisciplinary tradition of Core.

The program begins with several days in Madrid followed by about a month in Granada.

Housing and Meals

In Madrid, students will live in shared hotel rooms. In Granada, students will be housed in shared residence hall rooms, with 3 meals a day (Monday - Saturday).

Curricular Options

Students are required to enroll in 7 credit hours, but may enroll in 10 credit hours. Students are encouraged to consult their academic advisor regarding eligibility for courses, pre-reqs, etc. More information regarding courses can be found in the University Bulletin. In addition, we have listed the current CAP status for each course. However, students should consult DegreeWorks for the most accurate information since courses that satisfy CAP requirements may vary by year of admission or according to a student's major. The Degree Audit is specific to each student. Consult your academic advisor for details.

ENG 336: Gender & Fiction (3 credits)
CAP:  Crossing Boundaries- Inquiry, Diversity and Social Justice
 Study of fictional representations of early modern Spanish men and women; the ways those gendered representations are complicated by a range of social differences in literature (e.g., race, sexuality, class, religion, and/or dis/ability); and some methods for critical inquiry when encountering gendered representations in fiction.  Exploring these ideas across different literary genres and across historical time periods, the course will focus on gender as a shaping influence for the production and reception of fiction and the ways writers use fiction to both inscribe and challenge conventions of gender and genre.
HST 310 History of Spain (3 credits)
CAP: Crossing Boundaries- Faith Traditions, Advanced Historical Studies
Study of the political, social, and cultural history of the Iberian Peninsula from the ancient to the modern period. Prerequisite(s): HST 103 or ASI 110 or equivalent.
SOC 339: Social Inequity (3 credits)
CAP:  Crossing Boundaries - Integrative, Diversity and Social Justice
 Study of social inequality in society. Emphasis on the processes that divide people into unequal groups, the effects of inequality on individual life experiences, as well as group-based privilege, oppression, and resistance. This course takes a comparative approach to how gender, class, and race have been understood and constructed in the U.S. and Spain. For example, Spanish and U.S. understandings of race and ethnicity are quite different, even though the manifestations of racism (such as racist expressions during soccer matches) can look similar.
UDI 310 MAXIE: Experience (1 credit; required)
This courses aims to utilize the city as the classroom where students can make sense of their experience through interactive discussion, group activities, and independent journaling. Through reflection, students internalize their study abroad experience and may undergo changes impacting attitudes and actions in their home country and at UD.  Graded mini-course required of all student participants.

While designed for students in UD's Core program, all UD students may take advantage of this amazing learning opportunity. Students must be 18 years of age or older and eligible to take courses for credit at the University of Dayton. Students who are in UD's Core Program  must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Students who are not in UD's Core Program, must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in order to participate. Students in good academic standing with a GPA below the required minimum may petition the Center for International Programs for consideration. Students must also be in good disciplinary standing.

Pre-Departure Orientation

For all University of Dayton summer programs, pre-departure orientations play a critical role in making study abroad a valuable learning experience.  All students accepted to participate in University of Dayton’s summer programs are required to take the pre-departure course, UDI 220: MAXIE - Prepare (Maximizing your International Experience). This course helps students develop intercultural communication and sensitivity skills and techniques that can be used in any context, as well as learn site-specific strategies to be employed in-country. Students will be given time to clarify academic and personal goals prior to departure. UDI 220 is a required class for your education abroad experience. It is divided into two parts: the first part involves meeting as a group during the semester prior to departure (5 class meetings plus 2 sessions on concepts of culture and health and safety abroad); the second part includes meeting upon returning to campus in the semester following the in-country experience (two class meetings).
