Disciplinary Standing Process

As a component of their application screenings, the Global and Intercultural Affairs (GIA) Center partners with the Office of Community Standards and Civility to obtain the disciplinary standing of all program applicants for its abroad and away programs.

The GIA Center  acknowledges that disciplinary status is not always indicative of a student’s ability to be successful and contribute towards the program’s success. However, this process seeks to minimize perceptible risk to the program’s success as well as to its participants. As a result, any student that is actively on disciplinary probation at the time of disciplinary review, regardless of probation end date, is automatically “not accepted” for their program of choice.

Note: Any student who is currently suspended or expelled, will not be considered for any program.  Their application will automatically be moved to ‘not accepted’ and the student will be notified accordingly.

Below you will find the process, and action steps, that will be taken thereafter for a student on probation, based on the type of program the student is actively pursuing.

Screening
Regular enrollment reports will be run  for all current program applicants per the schedule listed below for each program.

Semester Exchange Programs:

Disciplinary status will be reviewed at the deadline for starting the application, but prior to the application submission date.  This will be conducted roughly around September 15th and February 15th. Disciplinary status will be reviewed again at the end of the term prior to the semester abroad or away program. Students who are currently on probation will be moved to ‘not accepted’ status for the program until notification of their probation dates are shared with the appropriate GIA staff.

Student’s probation end date is prior to start of program: If a student’s probation period ends prior to their program start date, or they have the ability to successfully complete the STAMP program and be taken off of probation prior to this same date, the student will be considered for the program.  The only exception to this policy is in the case of competitive programming. If a student is actively on probation at the time of the application deadline, the student will not be considered as a priority applicant in the selection process for the program.

Student’s probation end date is after start of program: If a student is not eligible to return to good standing prior to the program start date, they will remain in “not accepted” status and will not be eligible to participate in the program. There will be no appeal process.
Student currently suspended or expelled: If a student is currently suspended or expelled from UD, they are not eligible to continue with their application regardless of their scheduled end date and there is no appeal process.  However, if they are returned to good standing at UD prior to the application deadline, they can request to have their application reinstated, pending space available on the program.
Faculty-led Programs (Summer/Winter Break Programs and Integrated Learning):

Disciplinary status will be reviewed on a monthly basis during the application period and every other week during the final month prior to the deadline and then leading up to the program start date. If a student is currently on probation, they will be moved to “not accepted.” Next steps will depend on each student’s specific scenario, as outlined below:

Student’s probation end date is prior to start of program: A student will have the opportunity to request to be reinstated and provide documentation that their scheduled probation end date (either naturally or via the STAMP program) is prior to the program start date. If that is the case, they will have the option to be reinstated prior to their probation end date, if space is available on the program. However, they will be informed/reminded in writing that they will be subject to the withdrawal/refund policy. If they do not fulfill requirements to be removed from probation prior to the program start date, they will be withdrawn from the program and subject to any financial penalties.

Third Party Programs:

Disciplinary status will be reviewed on a rolling basis in accordance with the application deadline for the various providers.
Process will follow the same procedures as the Faculty-Led Programs.
